EDgemoor Gardens Empowerment (EDGE) Ministries
is an outreach ministry to our neighbors in the Edgemoor Gardens community of North Wilmington; serving to inspire, empower and equip residents to transform their lives and their community. The goal of this ministry is to build relationships with the unchurched, connect Church of the Covenant to its immediate neighborhoods, invite Christians into the fellowship of the church and lead people to a commitment to Christ.

This outreach has been serving our Edgemoor neighbors since May of 2011 when our Commissioned Ruling Elder (CRE), Ginny Jones, was commissioned by New Castle Presbytery as a Lay Pastor for Local Mission in the PC(USA). Her "official" role is to serve in this outreach ministry under the support and guidance of Presbyterian Church of the Covenant.

after1With funding received from grants awarded in 2011 from New Castle Presbytery, a community survey identified resident concerns, hopes, and dreams; which assisted Church of the Covenant in developing initiatives to best meet both the physical and spiritual needs of the community.

With the help of ongoing grant awards, new programs are continually being identified that target children, teens and women. Plans are being developed to begin a women's ministry program that will provide much needed resources for parenting skills, career skills, and spiritual support. Programs for teens held in Edgemoor Gardens receive both financial and volunteer support from this outreach. Each summer, we co-manage the Summer Feeding Program through Delaware Food Bank which provides breakfast, lunch and snack to children through age 18 on Monday through Friday. We maintain a visible presence and contributor to the Back-to-School Backpack Giveaway in August, as well as support the Adopt-A-Family holiday project each December.

after2Family Community Dinners are held monthly at Church of the Covenant, as we assist Edgemoor Gardens teens in planning, preparing and serving a family style dinner to bring community residents together for fellowship and relationship building. These dinners are funded through grants obtained by Edgemoor Revitalization Cooperative for a Human Capacity Campaign Project, which works primarily with the youth (middle school through high school) residing in that community.

All of the EDGE Ministry opportunities are designed to recruit, equip and supervise church members to serve our neighbors in Edgemoor Gardens while developing relationships of pastoral care and concern.

after3The EDGE After-School for Kids Program opened in February of 2012. The program runs from 3:30 to 5:30 each Tuesday for children in grades K-2 and each Wednesday for children in grades 3-5. The weekly lessons are based on Christian virtues, taught through Bible stories and related creative learning activities. The children are excited and enthused to come to Covenant, meet their "mentors of the day", learn about Jesus, get a start on their homework, and get rid of some of that pent up energy at the end of the school day. It is truly a joy to see the children growing both spiritually and mentally as they learn about God and Jesus, and receive mentoring and love from our dedicated volunteers. Plans are now underway for the 2012-13 school year as this program resumes on Tuesday, October 2nd with an even larger enrollment.

Volunteers ~ Our Most Important Resource: Many hands are needed to make all of our EDGE Ministries programs a success and continue to expand and grow. We need three volunteer mentors on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for the after-school program in order to support and work directly with the children between the hours of 3:15 and 5:30. If you are interested in serving as a mentor, story teller, homework helper, or as general support, please contact Ginny Jones, CRE, by calling the church at 764-9007 or emailing to ginnyjones12@verizon.net for more information.
